Sources and attribution

Last updated: 5 October 2026

Al-Tahqeeq shows texts; it does not write them. Every narration, verse and commentary on this site has a source, and every hadith card links to its page on sunnah.com so you can verify it yourself. This page names where each text came from and gives the credits those sources ask for.

Hadith

The library is Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Arabic and English, in the numbering used by sunnah.com. The English of Sahih al-Bukhari is the translation of Muhammad Muhsin Khan; the English of Sahih Muslim is the translation of Abdul Hamid Siddiqui. The texts were obtained from the open dataset meeAtif/hadith_datasets (MIT licence), which carries sunnah.com's references.

Chapter headings and book titles, in Arabic and English, come from the LK-Hadith-Corpus of the University of Leeds and King Saud University. Its authors ask that users cite: Altammami, S., Atwell, E., Alsalka, A. (2019). “The Arabic–English Parallel Corpus of Authentic Hadith”, International Journal on Islamic Applications in Computer Science and Technology; and (2020) “Constructing a Bilingual Hadith Corpus Using a Segmentation Tool”, LREC 2020.

“Graded sahih” on this site means membership in one of these two collections, which their compilers held to the standard of sahih. We do not grade narrations ourselves and we show no narration from outside the two books.

Quran

The Arabic text of the Quran is the Tanzil Project text (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0), shown verbatim and unchanged, as its terms require. Tanzil asks that its source be clearly indicated and linked, so that readers can keep track of changes: tanzil.net.

The English translation shown with verses is Marmaduke Pickthall's The Meaning of the Glorious Koran (1930), a public-domain text. Commentary (tafsir) is drawn from Ibn Kathir (abridged) and Ma'arif al-Qur'an by Mufti Muhammad Shafi, and from Maududi's Tafheem al-Quran. The translation and the first two commentaries are obtained through the Quran Foundation content API and kept current through its Content Sync service; Quran Foundation is credited here as its terms ask.

What we add

The topic index, the search, the relevance judging and the phrasing of answers are our own work. None of it writes a source text: an answer is built from the narrations retrieved, and the citation tokens a model places are the exact references the retrieval returned. Hosted models never choose a source and never write a citation.
